Sabbath observance was commanded at creation and again in the 10 commandments, “Remember the Sabbath…”
For several years, we did our very best to disprove the validity of the seventh day Sabbath. We utterly failed and (any legitimate study will conclude the same) had to face the hard facts. If you read and study the inspired words of the Scriptures without bias… you will reach the same conclusion. It is not done away with! Our Creator rested and set it apart as THE day of worship. Who dares to defy His commands?
The Sabbath was created for man and therefore set aside by our Creator for our physical and spiritual rest and rejuvenation. No human, priest, council, emperor, or any other ruling body has the power and/or authority to override the Creator of the Universe when it comes to His chosen Sabbath day.
Scripture plainly states that the seventh day is the Sabbath, and to remember it, and keep it sacred and it specifies a required assembly for called or set apart ones to observe it. That alone tells us that very few will actually keep the Creator’s day of worship.
What happened to keeping/remembering the Sabbath? Of course, we humans chose to forget it, or for centuries now have chosen to just follow pagan tradition and go observe other days of the week for worship instead. For the Christian world that day is Sunday, the first day of the week. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with worshiping on every single day of the week. For Muslims, the day is typically Friday.
But, our Creator’s Sabbath day, is the only day that He created for us to observe. He set it apart by resting on it when He has no need of rest. Yes, that day is Saturday or the seventh day of the week.
Many attempts have been made to excuse and do away with the seventh day Sabbath. The Creator does not like made up rules that are not His own!
As we shall see, the observance of Sunday as the day of worship is a command of men not of our Father in heaven. We need only look at the history of the Hebrew patriarchs and of the Jews themselves, to see which day to keep.
The rebellious children of Israel themselves probably did observe other days of worship as the pagans of the day. They had a habit of disobedience. They also worshiped the creation rather than the Creator such as the “sun” and served idols, broke the law, etc. But, when the Children of Israel were caught serving another “mighty one” instead of the true God or disobeyed the Sabbath, that person was put to death. Exo 31:15: “…Everyone doing work on the Sabbath day shall certainly be put to death.” Yhvh took Sabbath observance very serious. Sin is sin- and leads to eternal death unrepented of.
On the other hand, observance allows for us to receive the gifts promised us for loving Yhvh and keeping His law …‘you shall live!” Grace does not do away with the law. It merely allows us to repent and be forgiven as many times as necessary when we fall short. It is a pardon that we do not earn of ourselves. Else the penalty would have to be paid immediately upon our sinning. Prolong sinning unrepented of leads to death… There is forgiveness extended to us as long as we are living.
Extremes have been and are practiced in the observance of the Sabbath, and what is or was “lawful on the Sabbath day” . If an ox or sheep is in the ditch, it was removed, but we refuse to help a brother in need? The Sabbath does allow loving your neighbor, and it is not “work” that has to be abstained from on the Sabbath.
Instead of only mentioning the off subject scriptures to “disprove” the Sabbath, let’s actually look at the subject matter scriptures first. In Exodus 20:8-11 ISR (You may use any translation you prefer to compare.) :8-Remember the Sabbath day, to set it apart. :9-Six days you labor, and shall do all your work. :10-but the seventh day is a Sabbath of Yhvh. You do not do any work- you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. :11-For in six days Yhvh made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore Yhvh blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart.
WAIT A MINUTE! BLESSED? This is overlooked by most!! We all know the power and glory assoicated with the “blessing” of Yhvh. We want it badly. Right? Well he BLESSED the Sabbath as a day- for rest, worship, and reflection of Him and His way of life. You must do observe that day ONLY to claim a blessing from Him for worship of Him. No other day has been blessed by Him!! Are you willing to admit it and obey? You cannot prove it wrong. Even in the NT, the Sabbath and holy days were kept ALL the way through—pre and post Jesus.
The very Creator of the universe rested on the seventh day. We are safe to follow His example! We don’t have to go any further in our study do we- really? Yhvh created the Sabbath by setting an example for us! He did not need a break to rest his weary bones!
There are three popular arguments used against Sabbath keeping. Probably, the most popular claim is, “now we keep the Lord’s day.” Next there is the “Christ was resurrected on Sunday so we chose to observe that day claim,” and the last I’ll mention, “it was the day of the official start of the New Covenant church” claim. Next, is the mentioning of the first day of the week for breaking bread or counting money. The money argument can be debunked very quickly— first of all they would no observant Sabbath keeper would have counted money on the Sabbath! That would have been considered work!
Nowhere is there a “observe the first day of the week” scripture or command. And, repeatedly every mention of the day of rest from our labors is referring to the seventh day. And lastly is the term “the Lord’s day” which is found in several New Testament verses. It makes sense to look into these in the original Greek. These scriptures refer mainly to the :”Day of the Lord” – the time when severe trials and tribulations come up the earth when a new world order will be ushered in. After this time… Zech 14 states that all people of the earth will keep the Feast of Booths/Tabernacles and proclaims punishment if they do not.
We will address the above mentioned arguments in another article. But, the beliefs hold no weight with our Creator, nor with us.
